Pokémon fans finally got an idea of how they’ll catch ‘em all on mobile this week.
The upcoming game, which is launching on iOS and Android, blends real world locations with augmented reality Pokémon using your phone’s camera and GPS.
You’ll be able to hunt for wild Pokémon hiding in plain sight, but certain types will only appear in their native environment.
Want to bag a Squirtle? You’ll have to head to the ocean or a lake. That could make tracking down fire Pokémon like Magmar and Charmander a little tricky, then.
With the app installed, your phone will vibrate when a Pokémon is near. It’ll appear on the phone screen, and you can throw Poké balls to catch it.
You’ll have to stock up on Poké balls and other special items at real-world monuments, historical markers and art installations that have been designated PokéStops.
It’ll be baby steps and low-level Pokemon until you’ve caught a certain amount and levelled up enough to migrate to rarer species, but any Pokémon eggs you find can be hatched by walking a set distance in the real world.
Nothing’s in place yet, but the Pokémon Company is also planning Gym battles that let you join one of three teams to show your strength.
Gyms will be found in real world locations too, and only one Pokémon per player can be placed in one, so you’ll have to work with other trainers to defend it successfully.
Pokémon Go is in beta right now in Japan, but should get a full release later this year on iOS and Android.
